Who cares what religion George Clooney’s fiancé might follow
I saw this article today and thought who the f**k cares. Is this really what people should be asking themselves. Omid Safi asks this of his readers. Is he attempting to toot his own horn and heritage [What religion is Omid Safi?] – uh, who cares.
Many Arabs are naturally seeing this as a confirmation of the attractiveness of Arabs. [Just check out the outburst of pride on FB!]
I say again does her religion really play a part in all of this? Whether Ms. Alamuddin is Muslim, Shiite, Christian or Atheist who the fuck cares.
Safi then goes onto some speculation about which Muslim sect she might belong. The only redeeming fact from this post is that he points out that the union might be able to leverage Clooney’s notoriety to raise awareness of the plight of Syrian’s.
Many human rights activists see this as an opportunity to bring attention to catastrophes like Syria.
Safi’s attempt at satire falls sorely on its face and I can only imagine the Muslim outrage if it were a Jewish author writing this piece.
There is the perhaps to-be-expected satirical reports Israel would now order strikes on hot Lebanese women.
It may seem like a benign question however it is one of the fundamental issues inherent with religion. The first attempt to get to know someone is often – “Where do you go to church?” or “Where do you pray?’.
What religion are you? Who cares! Good on you George, lucky man
